Rare New Orleans mint $20 gold piece

Gordy Gold Shipwreck

During the Third Seminole War, $23,000 in gold (intended payroll for Federal troops stationed in the Indian River area) was lost when a small boat capsized while trying to reach Fort Capron. It remained undiscovered for 106 years until two young men stumbled upon it while crawfish diving. The state's portion of these coins are regularly exhibited, including a recent nationwide traveling exhibit created by the Museum of Natural History in New York entitled GOLD! Coins will soon be on display at the new Elliott Museum in Struat.
