Secretary Browning Announces Florida Main Street Award Winners

30 honor and merit awards presented for exceptional accomplishments

TALLAHASSEE – Secretary of State Kurt Browning today announced the recipients of the 2011 Florida Main Street Awards. The awards program encourages and acknowledges local Main Street Program accomplishments that advance the goals of the Florida Main Street Program.

“This year’s award winners excelled in their mission to revitalize historic communities and promote economic development,” said Secretary Browning. “Their efforts demonstrate how the Florida Main Street Program can help strengthen local communities.”

The Secretary’s awards are based on the recommendations of the Ad Hoc Florida Main Street Awards Committee. The committee included Florida Main Street Coordinator Joan Jefferson, Preservation Architect Eva Osborne, Laird Gann of Melbourne Main Street, Vivian Browning of Vilano Beach Main Street and Maggie Sacks of Ormond Beach Main Street.

Thirty honor or merit awards were presented for exceptional accomplishments within Florida Main Street communities. The 2011 award recipients include:

About Florida Main Street

Florida Main Street is a technical assistance program of the Bureau of Historic Preservation, managed by the Florida Department of State’s Division of Historical Resources. The bureau conducts statewide programs aimed at identifying, evaluating and preserving Florida’s historical resources. Main Street, with its emphasis on preservation, is an effective strategy for achieving these goals in Florida’s historic retail districts. Since 1985, the bureau has offered manager training, consultant team visits, design and other technical assistance, as well as the benefit of experience gained by other Florida Main Street programs.
